When I Die 03:51
Wake up sleep head. You can do your sleeping when we’re good and dead. I’ve tried so many times to let you know what’s going on in my mind. So, put your fears on a shelf, I can’t swim by myself and the water’s fine… I’ll turn it into wine for you. You’re such a hopeless case just like this marble making rings out in space. Let’s get on the 3:15. I wanna take you somewhere that the water is clean and the streets aren’t so warm but here comes the storm. See the whole Northeast wake up to see that we’re in for a whole lot of rain… You know I’m gonna stand by your side. I want you to miss me when I die. It’s high time o be long gone. You’re standing in the shower with your high heels still on. Turn off the broadcast news… is it any wonder that your so confused, singing the blues, I catch you sleeping in your shoes and its such a waste but it sells ad space. We wake up to find a falling sky… well, we’re in for a whole lot of rain! You know I’m gonna stand by your side… I want you to miss me when I die.

Reputation 03:30
Everything they told you ‘bout me it makes sense to me. Everything you’ve heard about me it makes sense to me. So, what’s the use in trying if my reputation precedes me? You don’t have to worry darling I’m yours exclusively. With all these rumors swirling ‘round, I’m the one you should believe. I’m too tired to fight about my reputation, precedes me. I don’t wanna hurt nobody, you especially. We could save some precious time and agree to disagree. You don’t wanna talk about my reputation, precedes me. Sometimes you can’t go home. Your better off alone. And even if you change your evil ways… they’ll think you’re still the same old way. Everything they wrote about me it makes sense to me. Everything they wrote about me looks like a good read. There’s no use denying that my reputation precedes me. But what’s the use in trying when my reputation… precedes me.

Ships 03:19
Hold the door for her, hold your tongue. Mother’s manners since you were young. He speaks his mind long after she has gone. Keeps her memories in one place, watches TV stares into space… the stars are lovely but they always fade. When your ship comes in… that big ship your expecting, where will you be then? Tell me where? Tell me when? Let’s her hair down, pause, react. Mirror tells her the things she lacks. Sometimes you cut it, sometimes it don’t grow back. When your ship comes in… that big ship your expecting, where will you be then? Tell me where? Tell me when? In a tower locked away and no one’s come to save her lately. He’s always wasting another day but often on his best behavior. She still hopes she’ll find a savior. One day the ships take her away… When your ship comes in… that big ship your expecting, where will you be then? Tell me where? Tell me when?

Phoenix 04:24
I've been trying to sleep but dreams they can render me conscious. There's only so much you can take and only so much you'll take with you. If I ever get any sleep I'm going to rise like a Phoenix. My blurry eyes give me away. I sulk down the streets for no reason. I cry and I spit out your name but wake to find I"m only dreaming. If I ever get any sleep I'll write a song for a Phoenix. I'm coming to see you.

Our Town 04:09
Here lies the city I was born in. Caught in the eye of the storm. Broken by high tide and saltwater. This is where my father used to call home. Built on the folklore and the fiction that propped us up and held us down. We're taught that we can walk on the water but she drove us up to find the high ground. My golden/broken city you're a vision. Your empty homes are more then they appear. People often talk about religion like religious men have only God to fear. When they talk of salvation, when they search for signs in the sky, we send them down to our wasteland because we know what they're going to find. In our town...

Devil 03:25
Are you pining for… are you pining for old ways. When the heroes won, when the hero saves the day. When you wrote the rules and you taught us how to play. It was a better time in a gentler world you made. You’re sending in the soldiers, sending in the thieves, you just made another enemy. Well, when we desert you, you’ll know how we feel. You just made a DEVIL out of me. Get your contracts signed so the dirty hands get paid… because no one’s safe from the waste that you have laid. You’re sending in the soldiers, sending in the thieves, you just made another enemy. Well, when we desert you, you’ll know how we feel. You just made a DEVIL out of me. Black or white… all or nothing. The truth is unkind but not as unkind as your secrecy. You can’t cover our eyes, our eyes, they see and they know. You’re sending in the soldiers, sending in the thieves, you’ve just made another enemy. Thank you corporate welfare, thank you sacred greed… you’ve just made a DEVIL out of me.

John Wayne 03:34
We weren’t trying to start a riot on the L.E.S. until the cops rolled up and said, “no picket signs near the high rise!” We didn’t have no money but we sure had a case, you know it’s hard to get a hearing when you a’int got no dough in the first place. They call us degenerates. They’d love to be rid of us but we’re gonna stick around and when those buildings burn to the ground. We burned ‘em down. They can’t quiet us. We love to hear them complain, “well, the country today it’s Goddamned shame!” If the American dream a’int American made then tell me why’d they call the C.I.A. on the day that we shot John Wayne. They keep asking stupid questions on the daily news shows but when no one gets the message sometimes you just have to kill a ghost. Some say we deserve our fate so we’re planning a great escape but we won’t be away too long and when those buildings are finally gone we’ll sing this song. They won’t find us. We’ll leave on a midnight train and by the time they awake we’ll be miles and miles away. We’ll wait our turn. And the neighborhood’s gonna burn when we let ‘em know that we’ve returned… They can’t stop us. We’ll be back when the coast is clear before they’re aware the end is near. When we arrive they’ll be no place to hide… when we let ‘em know we’re still ALIVE!

Lullaby 03:16
Take your feet and walk them down the stairs. You tiptoe through the garden to the square. You never tell me where it is you go. A week of sleepless nights away from home. You’re dosing during dinner, during drinks. Before dessert you have a couple winks. Your symptoms seem to worsen through the day. Could it be I make you feel this way? It seems that you don’t care for me anymore. Where love was once there isn’t anything sure. And all that I can do is write you a song… A song to help you sleep. I thought this cactus was a rose. Watch the thorns that’s how a cactus grows. I remember picking roses too. A stronger man simply wouldn’t care… If seems that you don’t care for me anymore. Where love was once there isn’t anything sure. And all that I can do is write you a song… A song to help you sleep.

We won’t be happy ‘til we’re gone but everything else will live on… the sun will still send its sweet flame. If these are our final days meet me in our hiding place. There’s a total eclipse of the sun… and if you need me when it’s done. You can find me in the shade. But don’t you come looking for me when Manhattan falls in the sea. I’ll simply be floating away. If these are our final days meet me in our hiding place. Visitors from outer space claiming they’ll clean up the place… they’ll probably bring more of the same. We won’t be happy ‘til we’re gone but everything else will live on… the sun will still send its sweet flame… If these are our final days meet me in our hiding place.

about

When I Die ironically marks a resurrection of sorts. After releasing 2010's the Disaster Handbook, Todd developed some very complicated vocal problems and ultimately required surgery. The band on that project sadly had to go their separate ways and the artist was left alone to recover. During that time Todd settled into one of his more comfortable places creatively, just his voice, fully healed, and a guitar. The album keeps a familiar upbeat mood and a tender optimism while asking some very important questions and pointing a few angry fingers. Todd and his new band toured throughout the summer and early fall of 2014 in anticipation of this new full length release. WHEN I DIE was released February 13, 2015. This Brooklyn based (and southern raised) singer/songwriter has fronted various types of bands from Prog-rock outfits & jam bands to Pink Floyd inspired psychedelic acts. However, if left to his own devices his Southern roots & strong pop sensibilities shine right through. He's a storyteller with a penchant for big hooks, catchy melodies and a knack for making the new sound suddenly familiar. ... more
