I haven’t seen her in a couple of seasons. She walks into town with a prodigal son. He’s throwing his money and showering praises, raising his glass to the new friends he’s made.

She’s always had wild eyes and boys that had likewise, he walks up to meet me and I buy the next round. “My daddy’s got wild eyes she says with a smile and when you know what your getting they can’t get you down.”

There’s all those tired clichés you try to spill when time won’t heal the things you hope it will. You’re just older now but no wiser somehow. Somehow… you’re no wiser now.

We sat there for hours, just time wasted drinking. The boy talked of things that he hadn’t done yet. While I told of women and gifts I’d been given, I guess most of all I spoke of regret.

Now I’m not saying I wish I was his age 'cause I wouldn’t change mine for a younger man’s shoes. There’s plenty of people you want to do it all over but doing it over’s just another chance to lose.

I should be home… and the Lord knows I’ve tried. The night are too lonely to stay with me only most times… and the days are just too long for me to stay dry.

Now every man comes to his final conclusions. I’ve got no illusions about the damage I’ve done. She’ll make her decisions, this girl and her wishes, it’s hard when your father’s a prodigal son.
